Excerpt from ‘The Plentiful’
From a pivotal turning point in The Plentiful — a novel about endurance, silence, and the journey home.
On her nightstand, tucked into the corner of a collage frame—crowded with sun-soaked smiles and a family portrait—was a photo of us.
Mary snapped it that first night with a disposable camera Sarah bought for no reason but whim.
We're mid-laugh. Her hand rests flat on my chest, like she’s anchoring me.
The opening riff of The Chain hummed through the boom box, low and familiar, all bassline and memory.
Sarah stared at the photo.
I felt like a smudge on the hem of her sundress.
Something everyone spots before you.
She lifted her eyes to meet mine.
Then, with a steady hand raised like a promise—
“I’m driving.”
